Roughcast is a coarse plaster surface used on outside walls that consists of lime and sometimes cement mixed with sand, small gravel, and often pebbles or shells. The materials are mixed into a slurry and are then thrown at the working surface with a trowel or scoop.
Plasterwork refers to construction or ornamentation done with plaster, such as a layer of plaster on an interior wall or plaster decorative moldings on ceilings or walls. This is also sometimes called pargeting.
Coving is a strip, usually made of plaster, placed along the intersection between a ceiling and a wall for decorative reasons.
One of the keys to good-quality solid flooring is the use of a screed. In many cases, it is not desirable or practical to apply the floor finish directly to the structure. So a screed, usually a cementitious material, is applied to create a smooth, level surface. Screeds can also be used to enclose heating elements or as a path to route services.
The term 'rendering' is generally used to mean a cement plaster applied to the external face of a building wall, as distinct from 'plastering' which includes all types of plaster and is generally applied to external work when the plaster contains lime.
